offers several academic programs to meet the needs of high school through adult
students. Students attending these academic programs complete the requirements

UTICA LEARNING ACADEMY
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The
purpose of the Utica Learning Academy is to provide an alternative high school
experience for student's aged 16-19 years old in need of a high school diploma.
The goal of the Academy to provide the opportunity for students to experience
both academic and social success.

Students are enrolled in one to four classes a day per ten week quarter

Utica Learning Academy follows the Utica Community Schools Calendar
- Students
must provide their own transportation
ENROLLMENT PROCESS
Students may enroll four times a year, or one time each quarter. Contact
the office at (586) 797-6970 for more information. Students inquiring
about enrollment will be placed on a waiting list. Be prepared with information
about the last school attended and credits earned so far. Students on
the waiting list are not guaranteed enrollment in the Utica Learning Academy.
The waiting list will be prioritized based on age, number of credits,
and recommendations from the home high school. Starting three weeks prior
to the new quarter, students will be contacted to set up an enrollment
appointment with an academic advisor.
POPULATION TO BE SERVED
There
are many types of students that can be served by the Utica Learning Academy. Ideally,
there should be a broad range of student abilities and background to help create
an appropriate environment. Utica Learning Academy has shown success in working
with students who have one or more or the following characteristics:
- Poor attendance patterns
- Behind
in credit

Overwhelmed with the size and structure of the traditional school setting

Academic difficulties

Relational problems

Priority
Considerations For Placement In Utica Learning Academy: -
18 & 19 years old with the ability to graduate during the current academic
year (if class has not graduated must meet additional requirements if the student
starts in the third or fourth quarter)
- Who
are employed during the daytime
- Recommendation
from High Schools of Utica Community Schools

Currently not attending school
Inappropriate
reasons for Placement In Utica Learning Academy: -
Not a morning person

Violent/Disruptive behavior

Unmotivated
- Avoiding
graduation requirements of the traditional high schools
- Trying
to graduate early
